Bank reconciliation in Tally Prime is the process of matching the transactions recorded in your Tally Prime company books against the transactions on your official bank statement. The goal is to confirm that every payment, receipt, and transfer that appears on your bank statement has a corresponding voucher in Tally — and to identify any discrepancies (uncleared cheques, bank charges not yet entered, timing differences, errors).
Tally Prime made bank reconciliation significantly faster than Tally ERP 9 by introducing Auto Bank Reconciliation — the ability to import your bank statement directly into Tally and have it automatically match transactions to vouchers based on date, amount, and narration. This reduced what used to be hours of manual work to minutes.

Tally Prime's Auto Bank Reconciliation requires your bank statement in a specific Excel format. The file must contain these columns in the correct order:
Key requirements:
Tip: Bank Statement Engine automatically produces the correct Tally Prime Excel format when you select "Tally" on the download page. Upload your bank statement PDF above, then choose the Tally download option — the exported Excel will have the correct column names, date format, and numeric values ready to import.
Download your bank statement PDF from NetBanking. Upload it to Bank Statement Engine (above) and download the Tally Excel file from the results page. Verify the date format is DD-MMM-YYYY and amounts are numeric.
Gateway of Tally → Banking → Bank Reconciliation. If you don't see Banking in the menu, ensure your company has bank ledgers configured under Accounts → Ledgers with the group set to Bank Accounts or Bank OD Accounts.
Tally Prime shows a list of bank ledgers in your company. Select the bank account you want to reconcile. The screen shows all unreconciled vouchers with their transaction dates and amounts.
Press Alt+B (Import Bank Statement) or click the Import Bank Statement button. Browse to your Tally-format Excel file and open it. Tally Prime reads all transactions from the Excel and attempts to auto-match them to existing vouchers based on:
Tally Prime shows three categories after import:
For unmatched bank entries: create the missing vouchers in Tally (bank charges as a journal, direct debits as payment vouchers). For unmatched Tally vouchers: verify if the cheque is still outstanding or was returned.
Once all differences are resolved, the closing balance on the bank statement should match the balance in Tally. Press Ctrl+A to accept and save the reconciliation.

Auto Bank Reconciliation is available in Tally Prime Release 2.0 and above (released 2021). If you are on an older release, update Tally Prime first.

The most common cause is date format mismatch. Tally Prime requires DD-MMM-YYYY (e.g., 15-Jun-2026). If your Excel file has dates in DD/MM/YYYY or any other format, Tally will either fail to import or import with incorrect dates. Use Bank Statement Engine's Tally output — it automatically uses the correct format.
Common mistake: Downloading the bank statement CSV/Excel from NetBanking and importing it directly — most bank Excel formats do not match Tally Prime's required column structure. Always convert to Tally format first.
If your Excel file contains amounts formatted with currency symbols (₹1,234.00) or thousand-separator commas in text format, Tally will read them as text and fail to match. Bank Statement Engine outputs clean numeric values without symbols.
Tally Prime matches on date + amount. If a voucher in Tally has a slightly different date than the bank statement (e.g., cheque issued on Monday but cleared on Wednesday), it won't auto-match. You can manually match these by selecting the Tally voucher and the bank entry and pressing Enter to reconcile.
If your Tally opening balance for the bank account does not match the opening balance on the bank statement, reconcile it from the beginning of the financial year or enter an opening balance adjustment voucher. The reconciliation closing balance will only match if the opening balances match.
If you prefer not to import a file, Tally Prime also supports manual bank reconciliation:
The manual method is practical for small accounts (under 50 transactions per month) but becomes time-consuming for larger volumes. Use the import method for accounts with 100+ monthly transactions.
The biggest practical obstacle to Tally Prime auto bank reconciliation is getting your bank statement into the correct Excel format. Most Indian banks provide:
Bank Statement Engine handles all of this. Upload your bank statement PDF (including password-protected PDFs from HDFC, SBI, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, PNB, Canara, and all other Indian banks), and the Tally download on the results page gives you the exact Excel format Tally Prime expects — correct column names, DD-MMM-YYYY dates, clean numeric values, no currency symbols.
